Exterior Design (BAW 212)
As a legendary hard-core off-road SUV of BAIC Motor Works (BAW), the BAW 212 inherits the brand’s profound off-road heritage spanning decades, and adheres to the classic “square box” design language that has been passed down for generations. Different from the modern and sophisticated style of the Beijing BJ40, the BAW 212 retains the original tough and simple off-road temperament, integrating classic retro elements with modern manufacturing craftsmanship, making it an iconic model in the Chinese off-road market and a favorite among off-road enthusiasts who pursue pure off-road experience and classic nostalgia.
The front fascia features a classic three-hole grille, a signature design element of the 212 series, paired with round LED headlights with double lenses and circular LED light strips, which not only retains the retro charm but also enhances the lighting effect. The raised engine hood, tough front bumper, and fog lights installed on both sides of the bumper highlight its rugged off-road identity, while the front bumper and wheel arches are seamlessly connected, improving the overall sense of refinement. The iconic square body lines, upright windshield, and flared wheel arches inherit the pure off-road DNA of the 212 series, and the engine hood cancels the external hinges, adopting a more integrated installation method, which enhances the overall strength and sealing performance. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle has a length of 4,705 mm, a width of 1,895 mm, and a height of 1,936 mm (2,070 mm with roof rack), with a wheelbase of 2,860 mm, presenting a sturdy and spacious SUV proportion. The short front overhang optimizes off-road passing performance, while the side is equipped with 17/18-inch alloy wheels matched with all-terrain tires and fixed side steps, and some models are equipped with snorkels and winches to further enhance off-road capability. The front fender is marked with a black “212” logo, which highlights the model’s identity.
The rear is equipped with three round LED taillights arranged vertically, echoing the retro style of the front headlights, and the tailgate adopts a side-opening design with a full-size external spare tire fixed on it, further enhancing its off-road charm. The rear bumper is rugged and practical, with built-in trailer hooks to meet the needs of off-road traction. The body is available in a variety of classic color options, including Military Green, Desert Yellow, Glacier White, and Starry Black, catering to the aesthetic needs of off-road enthusiasts and nostalgic users. Core off-road parameters deliver outstanding performance: an approach angle of 40°, a departure angle of 36°, a breakover angle of 23.6°, a minimum ground clearance of 235 mm, and a maximum wading depth of 850 mm, easily conquering complex off-road conditions such as rocky trails, sand dunes, mud pits, and deep water crossings.
Interior Design
The interior of the BAW 212 blends hard-core off-road practicality with modern comfort and intelligent experience, focusing on durability and functionality while adding appropriate modern configurations, suitable for off-road adventures and daily commuting. It offers a 5-seat layout, with the 2,860 mm wheelbase providing ample headroom and legroom for all occupants—180 cm passengers can enjoy comfortable seating in both the front and rear rows, and the flexible seat layout improves space utilization.
The cockpit is equipped with a practical intelligent system, including a LCD instrument panel and a floating central touchscreen, supporting smartphone connectivity, voice control, and basic intelligent interaction functions, bringing a convenient operating experience. The interior is wrapped with wear-resistant materials and high-quality leather, with exquisite stitching craftsmanship, and is equipped with ambient lights and a high-fidelity audio system, creating a comfortable and tough cabin atmosphere. Interior color schemes include all-black and black-beige two-tone, catering to different personalized preferences and highlighting the off-road temperament. The door frame adopts an integrated structure instead of the traditional split-type screw fixation, which enhances the overall strength and sealing performance.
In terms of features, the standard model comes equipped with front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, cruise control, single-zone automatic air conditioning, and a PM2.5 air purification system. The higher-spec models add a 360-degree panoramic camera system with transparent chassis, a panoramic sunroof, heated front seats, keyless entry, and one-button start, further enhancing comfort and safety. The 4/6 split-folding rear seats can expand the trunk volume significantly, easily accommodating camping gear, large luggage, and outdoor equipment, making it ideal for off-road adventures and family trips. In addition, the vehicle is equipped with “air defense lights” on both sides of the engine hood, which can be used as an expansion platform for camera gimbals and other equipment, enhancing practicality.
Powertrain
The BAW 212 is equipped with a powerful and reliable 2.0T turbocharged gasoline engine, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, focusing on off-road performance and reliability to meet the needs of complex off-road scenarios. The engine (model: N20TG) has a maximum power of 185 kW and a peak torque of 410 Nm, with a displacement of 1,998 ml, and can continuously output strong torque in the speed range of 1,900-3,300 rpm, ensuring strong power support for off-road climbing and Break free.
The 8-speed automatic transmission is specially adjusted for off-road scenarios, with a wide speed ratio range of up to 7.81, which not only improves low-speed torque performance but also ensures smooth shifting and fuel economy. The transmission can withstand a maximum torque of 500 Nm, leaving room for power improvement and meeting higher off-road needs. The vehicle uses 92# gasoline, with excellent fuel economy, and meets the National VI emission standard (GB18352.6-2016), which is environmentally friendly and practical.
The powertrain system has undergone 366 strict off-road reliability tests, and the cumulative mileage of national road adaptability verification exceeds 1 million kilometers, covering high-temperature, high-cold, and high-altitude regions, ensuring reliable performance in extreme off-road conditions. The vehicle has a maximum speed of 170 km/h, and the power output is linear and stable, balancing off-road performance and daily driving comfort.
