On June 23, Leapmotor International inaugurated a new battery assembly plant in Maren, Spain, located near the electric vehicle and battery production base jointly established by Stellantis and CATL.
The facility is designed for an annual production capacity of approximately 65,000 battery modules, with the potential to expand to 100,000 modules. It is compatible with various battery chemistries and will initially produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for electric vehicles, which offer cost-effective energy storage capabilities.
Leapmotor employs a collaborative work model involving Chinese and Spanish staff, with some Spanish workers having already traveled to China to complete specialized training. Stellantis holds a stake in Leapmotor and plans to begin assembling the Leapmotor B10 all-electric SUV at its plant in the Aragon region of northeastern Spain starting in late 2026; CATL will begin producing battery cells in the same region by the end of 2026.
Additionally, Stellantis and Leapmotor plan to begin production of a new compact all-electric vehicle called the E-Car at the Pomigliano d’Arco plant in Italy in 2028. Positioned as an affordable model, it is expected to be priced at approximately 15,000 euros, with the goal of achieving large-scale mass production.
