The BMW i3, as a pioneering compact luxury pure electric sedan in the BMW electric lineup, inherits the brand’s classic sports sedan design genes while integrating exclusive elements for electric models, featuring a sleek and dynamic sedan silhouette with a low and streamlined stance that highlights its luxurious, sporty and futuristic temperament. The front fascia is equipped with the iconic BMW closed kidney grille, surrounded by subtle blue accents that signify its pure electric identity, seamlessly integrated with sharp LED adaptive headlights and distinctive L-shaped LED daytime running lights, creating a bold and sophisticated visual impact. The rear end adopts sleek L-shaped LED taillights with a dynamic light effect, paired with a subtle rear spoiler and a hidden exhaust design (consistent with electric vehicle characteristics), further emphasizing its pure electric identity and aerodynamic performance. The body adopts a unique Life Drive structure with carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) applied to the body, seats and chassis, ensuring lightweight and high strength, and is equipped with unique suicide doors (coach doors) that enhance its distinctive personality. It is available in a variety of premium color options, with optional exterior packages to meet personalized needs, including the Sport Package with sporty body details and the Luxury Package with elegant trim accents.
In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4,872 mm in length, 1,846 mm in width, and 1,481 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,966 mm, adopting a 4-door 5-seat layout and providing ample interior space for both front and rear passengers, especially the extended wheelbase that significantly optimizes rear legroom for a more comfortable riding experience. The body adopts an aerodynamic design that effectively reduces wind resistance, which not only improves driving stability but also enhances energy efficiency. The rear seats feature a flexible split-folding design, which increases flexibility for storage and seating, while the spacious trunk capacity meets the needs of daily commuting and short-distance travel, perfectly balancing practicality and luxury for compact luxury electric sedan users.
Interior Design
The BMW i3 boasts a modern, minimalist and environmentally friendly interior design, drawing inspiration from sustainable travel concepts, focusing on luxury, comfort, intelligence and environmental protection, with a brand-new integrated driving cockpit that combines ergonomics and simplicity to create a digital luxury interactive space. It is equipped with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch floating central touchscreen integrated into the BMW Curved Display, delivering an outstanding visual experience with high screen clarity and smooth operation, and the display screen is tilted toward the driver, interpreting BMW’s classic “driver-oriented” interior design concept. The cabin is adorned with premium and environmentally friendly materials, including responsibly sourced wool and naturally tanned leather (treated with olive oil leaf based agent), recycled plastics (accounting for a quarter of the total plastics in the car), and treated eucalyptus wood trim (with BMW replanting one eucalyptus tree for every one used), elevating the overall luxury and environmental atmosphere. It is also equipped with the iconic BMW “Crystal Three-Piece Set” (crystal glass start-stop button, gear shift lever and iDrive control knob) and lightweight seats, while the M Sport Package is equipped with integrated M sport seats that provide excellent wrapping and support.
In terms of features, the standard model comes equipped with 18-inch aerodynamic wheels, driver and front passenger airbags, front side airbags, front and rear head airbags, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, cruise control, and automatic air conditioning, among other practical and luxurious functions. The higher-spec models add Level 2 driver-assistance systems, active braking, a 360-degree panoramic camera system, premium surround sound system, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel, further improving driving safety and convenience. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with the iDrive 8 operating system that supports OTA upgrades, as well as a small liquid crystal display on the steering wheel that transmits vehicle information to the driver, realizing more convenient and intelligent human-vehicle interaction.
Powertrain
The BMW i3 is equipped with the advanced BMW eDrive electric drive system, offering two powertrain configurations (pure electric and extended-range hybrid) to meet different driving preferences, paired with a single-speed automatic transmission. The pure electric version is equipped with a single electric motor, delivering a maximum power output of 125 kW (170 hp) and peak torque of 250 Nm, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, with an official top speed of 150 km/h, ensuring strong and smooth power output throughout the driving process, perfectly embodying BMW’s iconic driving pleasure even in the electric era. The extended-range hybrid version adds a 650cc two-cylinder gasoline engine (64 hp) to supply power to the lithium battery, further improving the cruising capability.
The BMW i3 comes standard with a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, offering a pure electric CLTC-rated range of 130-160 km, while the extended-range hybrid version can achieve a maximum range of up to 300 km, meeting the needs of daily commuting and short-distance travel. In fast-charging mode (BMW dedicated charging device), it takes approximately 1 hour to charge from 0% to 100%, and it also supports AC charging for convenient daily use, compatible with 220V household charging which takes about 8 hours to fully charge. The vehicle also features BMW EfficientDynamics technologies to optimize energy consumption, ensuring a perfect balance between efficiency and performance, and the battery pack comes with a reliable warranty to add peace of mind for users.
